Just a few minutes outside of the city of Stockholm, the archipelago starts to unfurl. It consists of nearly 30,000 islands, and Braka is one of them – a small, isolated island with beautiful nature. In the summertime, a taxi boat is the ideal mode of transportation, or why not paddle? In the winter you can try the more adventurous way – ice skating.

Our only ask is that you’re being mindful of the nature and neighbors – just like in any other home. The things you leave behind are your footsteps, and the things you take with you are memories.

Throughout my childhood, I’ve had a strong connection with the Stockholm archipelago. My family could never afford a summer house, so we took the boat out a lot. A couple of years ago, I left the stressful city life, sold my apartment and bought myself a little house out here. Living in the archipelago and still have close proximity to the city is the best decision I’ve ever made. It’s so peaceful here, yet so full of life. It has looked the same for thousands of years, the only thing changing is the weather. Braka is truly my personal favorite place to be.

My strongest memory of Braka is from one time when I was on a very adventurous ice skating trip. I was out taking pictures for my book and stumbled upon this island. It looked so great I had to take a break from my photography and lie down on one of the cliffs to soak in the march sun for an hour or so.

Allemansrätten – or the freedom to roam – is a principle protected by Swedish law that gives all people the right to be free in Swedish nature. In other words, Swedish nature isn’t just a piece of land with trees and lakes and cliffs – it’s a home with all the necessities and amenities that any great home should have. It’s a place where you can eat berries from the ground, sleep under the stars, swim in the lakes and roam freely. To make this home available for everyone, Sweden has listed the entire country on Airbnb.
